Instructions to Authors

The Indian Journal of Veterinary Surgery is published half-yearly in a size 19.5 cm x 25 cm in 2 columns, set solid, in a print area of 17.5 cm x 23.5 cm.


Nature of coverage: Indian Journal of Veterinary Surgery publishes original research/clinical work/review articles/special articles/historical notes in the field of veterinary surgery and allied subjects. Preference is given to the original full articles, however, short notes/case reports based on research/clinical work are also acceptable. Critical reviews are accepted by invitation only. Book review by subject-matter specialists will be published for the book sent to the journal for review. Manuscripts are considered for publication on the understanding that they have not been published and are not being considered for publication elsewhere and that they may not be republished without prior permission from the publisher.


Manuscript should be typed in double space with ample margin. The spelling should be that of the Oxford English Dictionary. Manuscript should be headed with the title of the paper, the name and postal address of the author or authors or where applicable the address of the institution where the work was done. Original full articles should not exceed 12 typed pages, including references, tables and graphs. Short notes should not exceed 4 typed pages. Abstract and headed sections are not required for short notes. In case of full papers, the body of the manuscript should be divided into sections viz. abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion and references.


Abstract should not exceed 150 words. The abstract should be informative and be complete in itself without reference to the text, figures or tables. It should be typed separately alongwith the title (top) and 4-6 key words (bottom).


Introduction should be brief and should identify the subject aims and objectives alongwith the lacunae in earlier work in that field.

Materials and methods should be complete and precise. This should include the design and technique employed. If a well known method was used, citation of relevant authority is sufficient with mention of modification, if any. Insignificant, unessential, common details should not be given. Statistical methods used should be mentioned at end of this sections.


Results and discussion should be combined to avoid repetition and duplication, including mean data and their standard errors/standard deviation, where applicable. The results should be related with other standard and recent work on the subject, drawing logical interpretations and conclusions.


References to the previous work should be cited in the text with author’s name and year of publication in parenthesis, e.g. Singh (2011) in case of single author and Singh et al. (2011) in case of multiple authors. At the end of the paper the references should be listed in alphabetical order of the surnames of the authors with all authors initial included, year of publication, title of the article, name of the journal, volume (bold typed) and page range of the article. The name of the periodical should be abbreviated according to the world list of Scientific Periodicals, 2009, fourth edition, Butterworths, London. For abstracting journals, complete information about original publication and name of abstracting journal, volume page range, abstract number and year of publication (All in parenthesis). For books, name(s) and initial of author(s), year of publication, title of chapter, title of book, publisher and volume (if any), edition and the relevant page range consulted.


Illustrations referred to as figures should be submitted in duplicate larger than the size desired for reproduction. Drawings, diagrams and graphs should be in black ink on smooth white paper. Black and white/colour photographs should be given where it is applicable. Nothing should be typed or written on the back of the illustrations except authors name, a short title of paper and a figure number with a light lead pencil. Legends to the figures should be supplied separately. If transmitted through post, illustrations should not be folded but should be protected by card board paper. The authors have to bear the cost of printing of coloured photographs at the rate of Rs. 1,500/- (USD 50) per page.


Tables should be typed on separate sheets and numbered in Roman numerals. Each table should not exceed the equivalent of the half the journal page.


Authors are advised to submit the revised manuscripts including figues, tables and photographs on CD-rom. A proof of each article will be sent to the corresponding author. Only minor corrections to the proof should be done.
Reprints: Ten reprints will be supplied to the corresponding author on the payment of following charges:

Review Article: Rs. 1500 (foreign authors: USD 200); Full length Research Article: Rs. 1000 (USD 100); Short Communication/Clinical Article: Rs. 500 (USD 50).
